Nvidia is officially releasing DLSS 5, its AI upscaling technology, this week. The rollout follows a divisive March announcement, during which The Verge compared the feature to a real-time generative AI filter and to motion smoothing for games.
According to the report, DLSS 5 will be available on RTX 50-series desktop and laptop GPUs, as well as through the GeForce Now cloud gaming service. At launch, the only supported title is NBA 2K27, which releases September 3rd at 9PM PT on PC. When first announced, Nvidia described DLSS 5 as its most significant graphics breakthrough since the introduction of real-time ray tracing in 2018.
Why it matters
The technology requires substantial GPU hardware and is limited to Nvidia’s latest RTX 50-series lineup, which narrows the pool of users who can access it. Its debut with a single supported game also indicates limited initial availability.
Who should care
PC gamers with RTX 50-series GPUs and GeForce Now subscribers are the immediate audience, particularly those planning to play NBA 2K27.
