Apple is introducing a feature called “Reference Image” aimed at verifying that a photo has not been manipulated by AI. According to the report, the feature will launch with the iPhone 18 Pro lineup later this month and relies on the device’s new camera sensor to “sign every pixel it sees.” The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will authenticate photos only when the camera is set to Reference mode. After capturing signed sensor data, Apple says its Private Cloud Compute develops it into what it describes as an unalterable reference image, viewable in the Photos app. Users can then compare that reference image with other versions of the photo to check whether any edits were made.
