Two major AI chat products have each reached 1 billion users. Google CEO Sundar Pichai posted on X that Gemini now has a billion monthly users and described it as Google’s fastest-growing product ever. It is the 14th Google product to reach the 1 billion mark.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT reached the milestone first, a few weeks earlier. The company noted that more than 1 billion people were using ChatGPT in an August 6th blog post about how people use AI, rather than in a dedicated announcement. External data cited by The Verge suggested ChatGPT may have crossed 1 billion users as early as June.

Reaching 1 billion users indicates the scale at which consumer AI chat products are being adopted, with two competing offerings now at that level.
