Google is opening its smart home platform to third-party AI agents through a new integration called Google Home MCP, built on the standardized Model Context Protocol. According to Taylor Lehman, group product manager at Google Home & Nest, the integration lets any MCP-compatible agent — including Google Antigravity, Claude, Hermes, and Open Claw — securely work with the devices and event history in a user’s Google Home ecosystem. The agents can control and monitor connected devices, analyze home data, and act on a user’s behalf.

Why it matters

By adopting the Model Context Protocol, Google allows external AI tools rather than only its own assistant to operate within the smart home, potentially broadening how users automate and query their connected devices.

Who should care

Smart home users, developers building AI agents, and companies working with the Model Context Protocol may find the new integration relevant to how agents interact with home devices and data.
