At its DevDay keynote on Tuesday, OpenAI announced Dots, a set of always-on AI assistants positioned as a response to Meta’s Muse. According to the announcement, Dots can operate in the background across connected apps and learn user preferences over time.

Dots are powered by OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra model and rely on their own cloud computer to access a web browser and more than 4,000 supported apps. Like Muse, each Dot is represented by a customizable avatar. Users can interact with a Dot through a text-message-like interface or by starting a voice call from ChatGPT on the web, desktop, or mobile.

Why it matters

The launch places OpenAI directly against Meta’s Muse in the emerging space of agentic personal assistants designed to act across apps rather than only respond to prompts.

Who should care

Users of ChatGPT across web, desktop, and mobile, along with those following the competition between OpenAI and Meta on AI assistants, may find this relevant.
