Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s special projects lead and the company’s former chief operating officer, announced he is leaving the AI lab after eight years. In an internal memo that he later shared on X, Lightcap told colleagues he plans to start “something new.”

Lightcap wrote that he had recently focused on “the next horizon” and on obstacles to the company’s mission, adding that he was excited to help advance that mission from a different vantage point. He said he would remain at OpenAI for the next few weeks.
