Shopify announced on Tuesday that it will allow shoppers to configure AI agents to browse and purchase products on their behalf, expanding its agentic commerce efforts. The move gives more agents access to the company’s catalog of over a billion listings, which includes items both on and off Shopify storefronts. To use the feature, customers connect an agent to the service.
The announcement builds on a September partnership with Meta that let its Muse agent browse and buy items for users. With this expansion, shoppers can now use any agent without requiring a specific partnership integration.
Why it matters
Opening the catalog to any agent, rather than only partnered ones, broadens how automated shopping tools can interact with Shopify’s merchants and could increase the reach of agent-driven purchasing.
Who should care
Merchants on Shopify, shoppers interested in automated purchasing, and developers building commerce-capable AI agents.
