Meta announced the Muse Spark Open AI model, which it describes as the “most capable US open-weight model to date.” The company also says it is the first model in its class that can run on a desktop using two Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studios with the latest MLX framework.
The launch is notable for its collaboration between Meta and Apple, companies that are typically competitors. Both publicly supported the release: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on X that the open weights, releasing today, run well on the new Mac Studios thanks to work with Apple, and new Apple CEO John Ternus replied with congratulations.
Why it matters
An open-weight model that can run locally on Apple hardware points to a path for running capable AI without reliance on cloud infrastructure. The cooperation between two usual rivals is itself unusual.
Who should care
Developers and users of Apple hardware, as well as those following open-weight model releases, may be interested in the model and its hardware requirements.
