Microsoft Research has released Aurora 1.5, an update to its open foundation model for weather and Earth-system applications. The new version extends the model with 22 additional variables, hourly temporal resolution, and probabilistic ensemble forecasting.

Why it matters

These additions are intended to make the model more applicable to real-world weather, climate, and energy use cases. Ensemble forecasting in particular supports probabilistic rather than single-outcome predictions, and finer temporal resolution allows for more granular analysis.

Who should care

Researchers and practitioners working in weather, climate, and energy applications may find the expanded variable coverage and forecasting capabilities relevant to their work.
