Apple says it will introduce new limits on “full disk access” for Mac, citing substantially increased risks tied to AI agents, according to a report first noted by TechCrunch. In an update issued Friday, Apple stated it is rolling out controls designed so that users who genuinely want to grant an app this level of access can only do so through very explicit action.
The announcement follows a report by Inc’s Jason Aten, who found that Meta’s Muse AI appeared to know the contents of his messages without his having given explicit permission on his iPhone or Mac. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone disputed the account, saying access to Messages is entirely opt-in.
Why it matters
Full disk access grants an application broad reach into a user’s files. As AI agents become more capable of acting on a user’s behalf, Apple frames this permission as carrying heightened risk, prompting tighter safeguards.
Who should care
Mac users, developers of apps that request disk access, and companies building AI agents that operate on personal devices should note the coming changes.
