Amazon SageMaker AI has introduced instance preference lists for training and processing jobs. Users can define an ordered list of up to five instance types, and the service automatically launches the job on the first type that has available capacity.

According to the announcement, this feature removes the need for manual retry loops and scripts that monitor for capacity, which teams previously used to handle instance availability constraints.

Why it matters

Compute capacity availability can be a bottleneck for machine learning workloads. By allowing an ordered fallback of instance types, SageMaker AI aims to reduce the operational overhead of securing capacity and starting jobs.

Who should care

Machine learning teams and MLOps engineers running training or processing jobs on SageMaker AI may benefit from a more automated approach to instance selection.
