Google is introducing new scam defense features for Android, aimed at helping users avoid mobile fraud. The update builds on the existing Scam Detection feature in Google Messages and adds additional safeguarding tools.

A new “enhanced protection” setting, expected to roll out in the coming weeks, uses cloud-based Gemini AI models to quickly assess the intentions of unrecognized senders during conversations. Google noted that scammers often hide their motives in slow-burn exchanges, and said the cloud-based analysis augments and extends its existing protections.

Why it matters

Mobile fraud frequently relies on gradual, deceptive conversations that are hard to detect in real time. Applying AI analysis to messages from unknown senders targets this specific tactic directly within the messaging app.

Who should care

Android and Google Messages users are the primary audience, particularly those concerned about text-based scams from unknown contacts.
