Microsoft Research has published Agent Lightning v1.0, described as a lightweight framework of roughly 3,500 lines for training AI agents with reinforcement learning. According to the post, training agents with RL is difficult because their tools, context, and decision-making are handled by complex frameworks. Agent Lightning aims to address this by connecting existing agents to RL training, allowing them to be improved without being rebuilt. The framework is positioned to work with real harnesses used by agents.

Why it matters

Reusing existing agent implementations rather than reconstructing them could lower the effort required to apply reinforcement learning to agent development.

Who should care

Developers and researchers working on agentic systems who want to apply reinforcement learning to agents already built on existing frameworks.
