What’s happening
Apple and OpenAI were close partners — in 2024 Apple integrated ChatGPT into iOS. Relations cooled after OpenAI moved into consumer hardware, including its 2025 acquisition of former Apple designer Jony Ive’s startup io Products. In July 2026 Apple sued in the Northern District of California, alleging OpenAI obtained Apple’s confidential hardware information — including by recruiting Apple employees — to accelerate its own devices. Apple seeks damages and injunctions; OpenAI denies wrongdoing. The allegations are unproven and the case is at an early stage.
